Awarded an ?A? in the Hospital Safety ScoreSM
PASADENA, Calif.--()--Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Southern California have received an ?A? Hospital Safety ScoreSM from The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The safety report also awarded the top grade to a total of 28 Kaiser Permanente hospitals around the country.
?We congratulate the hospitals that earned an ?A? and we look forward to the day when all hospitals in the U.S. will earn the highest scores for putting patient safety first.?
"Kaiser Permanente's electronic medical record system, combined with our infection control surveillance technology and the commitment of our people, enables us to maintain the highest quality of care and safety for our patients," said Edward M. Ellison, MD, executive medical director for the Southern California Permanente Medical Group. "Our physicians and staff are proud of the consistently high marks Kaiser Permanente is receiving from such prestigious organizations as The Leapfrog Group. This is great news for our members and the communities we serve."
The Kaiser Permanente Southern California hospitals that received an A ranking for patient safety are: Anaheim, Baldwin Park, Downey, Fontana, Los Angeles, Panorama City, Riverside, San Diego, South Bay, West Los Angeles, and Woodland Hills. The Kaiser Permanente Ontario Medical Center is not included in the survey that was finalized in August, 2011, because it opened its doors in November, 2011. Kaiser Permanente Irvine Medical Center and Kaiser Permanente Moreno Valley Community Hospital did not perform a large enough number of specific surgical procedures to meet the measurement criteria.
"The Leapfrog Group has given 11 of our Kaiser Permanente hospitals in Southern California a first-rate 'A' for patient safety on their hospital safety score. This recognition demonstrates the superior medical care we provide to our more than 3.5 million members and highlights for our patients the quality care they will receive when they are hospitalized," said Benjamin Chu, MD, MPH, MACP, group president for Kaiser Permanente Southern California and Kaiser Permanente Hawaii.
The Hospital Safety ScoreSM was calculated under the guidance of The Leapfrog Group?s Blue Ribbon Expert Panel using 26 measures of publicly available data on patient injuries, medical and medication errors, and infections. 2,600 U.S. hospitals were surveyed and assigned an A, B, C, D, or F for their safety. The safety score for each hospital can be found at http://hospitalsafetyscore.org/, the Hospital Safety ScoreSM website.
