Rihanna, Chris Brown: Twitter Reveals Shocking Messages

Rick Diamond, WireImage

Twitter is revealing some interesting information regarding the love lives of Rihanna and Chris Brown, R&B's once praised couple.

On Dec. 29, both singers sent out tweets replete with sentiments of romance, yet neither directed the messages to a particular person. Though there wasn't an addressee on either Twitter post, it appears the two were subliminally tweeting one another.

"I'll always love u

The 'F.A.M.E.' creator then went to his Twitter page to express his feelings. "Love U more than u know!," he tweeted Thursday.

While the former lovebirds are really the only two who know the truth behind their words, supporters and critics can't help but wonder if RiRi and C. Breezy were throwing love into the Twitterverse that was aimed at each other.

Since their publicized split in 2009, Rihanna and Chris Bown have steered clear of one another due to a restraining order, which has since been lifted. Both have moved on to new relationships with the 'Talk That Talk' chanteuse being linked to baseball player Matt Kemp, rapper Drake and her 'We Found Love' co-star, Dudley O'Shaughnessy, while Brown has been photographed with girlfriend Karrueche Tran lately.

As year closes, open your eyes to 5 standouts

By Courtney Hazlett

While some people?spent 2011 "winning," GTL-ing and marrying (and quickly divorcing), there were events in pop culture happening under a much dimmer spotlight. The following television shows, films, books, Twitter feeds and otherwise class acts aren?t total unknowns, they're just people and performances deserving of some singular attention as the year comes to a close. That everyone on this list is a woman, well that?s just a coincidence, but one that's totally fine by me.

So without further ado, the people who deserve an extra shout-out before the clock strikes 2012.

Best new character on television:
Claire Danes? Carrie Mathison, 'Homeland'
If, for any reason, you?ve previously written off Danes, or just not given Showtime's "Homeland" a chance, I implore you to reconsider. For the first time in I don?t know how long, Danes portrays a female character who all at once has considerable vulnerability, flaws and power (not to mention mental illness, which adds another dimension to all of that). Season two can't come quickly enough.

Best book of the year:
'Swamplandia!' Karen Russell
Critically, "Swamplandia" received a ton of praise, but the story of Ava Bigtree, a young girl raised on an alligator farm/amusement park didn't get enough attention from a wider cultural swath (Oprah's Book Club: this is how we miss you). Russell's debut novel is full of whimsy, but also wisdom (?it?s hard to hear your own happiness as an alarm bell," she writes at one point). HBO picked up the rights to develop this book into a 30-minute comedy series; I highly recommend you check out the story in its true form before that becomes a reality.

The Twitter feed you should be following:
@KellyOxford
This Canadian mother of three uses Twitter exactly how it should be used: as a (hilarious) mouthpiece for the darker parts of our consciousness. A few gems: this from Christmas Eve, "I have a huge fire roaring and the kids are screaming that it will be too hot for Santa, but I keep laughing and throwing logs on it. #eggnog." And this insight into Justin Bieber and her 3-year-old: "SERIOUS: My three year old just told me she wanted Justin Bieber's haircut because 'She's so pretty' :("

Oxford just sold a comedy to NBC, so we'll be seeing more of her work on the tube soon, but my Twitter feed would appreciate it if her best, unfiltered material stayed there.

Best film performance:
Shailene Woodley, 'The Descendents'
There's a feeling among my close friends and family that I loved "The Descendents" so much because it stars my George Clooney, but really, truly, the actor who plays his oldest daughter Alexandra, Shailene Woodley, is every bit as responsible for my affection for the film. In less capable hands, Woodley's character could have been cliche, grating, or just plain boring. Instead, the movie couldn't have been anywhere as remotely successful as it's been without Woodley's pitch-perfect performance. I'll be stunned, or at least feeling wronged-by-proxy, if she's not on the receiving end of some awards this season. Regardless, she's an actor we will be seeing for a very long time.

Getty Images

Class Acts:
A tie ? Sandra Bullock, Denise Richards
Seriously, these two women had some real doozies on their hands in 2011. Disappearing entirely would have been completely understandable, but neither did. Instead, they were both judicious with their public comments, did their work, and went on with their lives. When celebrity was rearing its ugliest of heads, Richards and Bullock were holding theirs high. They weren't just a good example to their peers (many of whom could have learned a thing or two), but to a lot of women in general. Good on you, and thanks for showing this little corner of showbiz how to be graceful.

TEEN FICTION: 'Dearly Loved'

This is a regular column featuring original fiction by and for high school students, provided by Figment.com, an online community writing site for young people.

I felt a pair of strong, warm arms wrap around my shoulders. My mind registered the person?s familiar scent and the face of my captor instantaneously popped into my head. On instinct I leaned back, resting my head against his shoulder. Eyes closing, I sighed in content.

The dream always started off the same, just like it always ended the same.

From then on I?d wrap my hands around his, tightening my much small fingers around his, not really in a possessive manner, but in such a manner that told him I never wanted him to leave. His arms would constrict around me, and then he would rest his chin on top of my head. I was always perfectly at ease there, in his arms, even if it was just a dream.

Everything seemed to go downhill from there though. As always I could feel him slipping away. The absence of his warmth would leave me cold. And I always ended up alone.

Even in my dreams I found being alone quite difficult, almost too much to bear. It seemed my dreams were the only place I could go to be with him, even if he eventually did leave. Waking up was the hardest part, and I had a feeling it always would be. It meant facing another day, facing another day without him.

Things used to be perfect. We were best friends and it seemed as if our relationship escalated from there because the next thing I knew we were more than friends. He won?t even talk to me now and that?s the worst part. Every tear that I shed, was for him and nothing else. I wanted him back so badly it hurt.

?Vida finish your paper.? I blinked, jerking awake as Kayla waved a tan hand in front of my face. She raised an eyebrow at me, eyes traveling in the same direction I?d turned my own to. I could practically hear her thoughts now. Asking me why I couldn?t just get over him, leave him behind like he?d so easily left me?

But it wasn?t that simple. Love was never that simple.

?Girl you have got to get over that boy. He?s obviously gotten over you. And here you are writing your paper about him. You?re supposed to write about yourself.? Her words hurt even though she hadn?t meant them to. Kayla had always been the blunt one and she was always straight to the point, the exact opposite of me. She was telling the truth though, something else she was good at. He had obviously gotten over me. I could tell by the way he smiled, so carefree and happy.

Why couldn?t I be like that?

All I felt in my heart was longing and jealously as he openly flirted with the nameless blonde girl he was standing with. She was pretty and evidently just as interested in him as he was her. Not that she could help herself. He was gorgeous even though he tried to modest about it, something else I loved and admired about him. He?d never been arrogant, which was surprising considering most guys who looked like he did normally were.

But no?he wasn?t just your average boy. No he was more.

Kayla groaned, probably just tired of watching me stare. ?Finish your paper before I have to drag your ass out of here.?

My eyes snapped to my dark haired friend as she stared down at me. She seemed pretty determined for me to finish my paper. I glanced down at the paper, sighing. ?Fine.? I grumbled, taking a pencil in my hand before beginning to write in my loopy cursive. Our English teacher had us writing a paper about ourselves and Kayla was right. I wasn?t really writing about myself. I was basically writing about how much I missed him, and how I was heartbroken. And the truth was I didn?t know who I was without him.

I tore my eyes away from the paper to once more glance back at him. I watched as he ran a hand through his dark hair, a smile adorning his handsome face. I watched the way his green eyes sparkled as he laughed, how he looked at her. I swallowed, wishing he still looked at me like that. But that?s all it was. A wish.

I tore what I had written out of my notebook, crumpling it up and tossing it in the trashcan that sat nearby. I took my pencil in hand, ignoring the look of interest Kayla was giving me, and then I wrote the first sentence of a new beginning.

I am Vida and my name means dearly loved.

#3: Apple MacBook Pro MD318LL/A 15.4-Inch Laptop (NEWEST VERSION)

Introducing the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro. The state-of-the-art quad-core Intel i7 processor delivers up to 2x faster performance (over the previous generation of MacBook Pro). New Thunderbolt technology lets you connect high-performance peripherals and high-resolution displays to a single port, and transfer files at lightning speeds. And with the built-in FaceTime HD camera, you can make astonishingly crisp HD video calls.

With the revolutionary Thunderbolt technology, you'll be able to achieve bi-directional channels with transfer speeds to peripherals like external hard drives and servers up to an amazing 10 Gbps--while also connecting to a DisplayPort-compatible high-resolution display.

As with previous models, the MacBook Pro features a precision unibody enclosure crafted from a single block of aluminum, creating a thin and light mobile computing workhorse (less than 1 inch thin and just 5.6 pounds) that's also highly durable. It includes a 15.4-inch, LED-backlit glass display as well as a glass trackpad that doesn't include a button (for larger tracking area) that features Apple's Multi-Touch technology. And it comes standard with automatic graphics switching that provides performance when you need it and energy efficiency when you don't. You'll also get up to 7 hours of battery life while on the go.

This version of the 15.4-inch MacBook Pro (model MD318LL/A) features a second-generation 2.2 GHz Core i7 quad-core processor, 500 GB hard drive, and 4 GB of installed RAM. Other features include ultra-fast Wireless-N Wi-Fi networking, Bluetooth connectivity, an SDXC card slot, two USB 2.0 ports, and a FireWire 800 port (see full specifications below).

OS X Lion

Every Mac comes with OS X Lion, the latest release of the world's most advanced desktop operating system. With over 250 features including Multi-Touch gestures, Mission Control, full-screen apps, and Launchpad, OS X Lion takes the Mac further than ever.

Key OS X Lion Features
  • Mission Control provides a bird's-eye view of everything running on your Mac.
  • Launchpad puts all your apps front and center for easy access.
  • View apps full screen and switch between them with a swipe.
  • Interact with your Mac using intuitive new Multi-Touch gestures.

Key Features

Revolutionary Thunderbolt Technology

Developed by Intel with collaboration from Apple, high-speed Thunderbolt I/O (input/output) technology delivers an amazing 10 gigabits per second of transfer speeds in both directions. Built into the MacBook Pro, the Thunderbolt port allows you to connect to new Thunderbolt-compatible peripherals as well as existing USB and FireWire peripherals using simple adapters. You'll be able to move data up to 20 times faster than with USB 2.0 and more than 12 times faster than with FireWire 800, and you can daisy-chain multiple high-speed devices without using a hub.

And because Thunderbolt is based on DisplayPort technology, you'll be able to connect to a high-resolution display from the same port. Any Mini DisplayPort display plugs right into the Thunderbolt port, and you can also connect displays that use DisplayPort, DVI, HDMI, or VGA connections with an existing adapter. You'll also be able to include your display into a daisy-chained set of peripherals.

Next-Generation Quad-Core Intel Processor

This MacBook Pro is powered by a second-generation Intel Core i7 quad-core processor, which provides breakthrough digital media management, content creation, and 3D gaming capabilities. With updated Intel Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, the latest Core i7 increases speed automatically for whatever you're doing, dynamically accelerating performance to match your workload.

Intel's Hyper-Threading Technology enables each core of your processor to work on two tasks at the same time, delivering the performance you need for smart multitasking. And you'll enjoy a rich set of new features for a stunning and seamless visual experience with no additional hardware. The Core i7 processor also provides faster access to the installed RAM, with an integrated memory controller to connect fast 1333 MHz memory directly to the processor.

With new microarchitecture, the graphics processor resides on the same chip as the central processor and has direct access to the 6 MB of shared L3 cache--helping your applications run at peak performance. And an integrated video encoder enables HD video calls with FaceTime, while an efficient decoder gives you long battery life when you're watching DVDs or iTunes movies.

Automatic Graphics Switching

The MacBook Pro offers excellent graphics flexibility with two video processors--the discrete AMD Radeon HD 6750M processor (with 512 MB of GDDR5 video memory) for heavier workloads and an integrated Intel HD Graphics 3000 processor for better battery life on the go. When gaming or using processor-intensive applications like Aperture or Final Cut Pro, you'll appreciate the power of the AMD Radeon HD 6750M, which lets you see more frames per second and experience better responsiveness. And the automatic graphics switching feature determines which graphics processor an application needs and switches instantly between the processors.

Buttonless Multi-Touch Trackpad

With no button on the glass trackpad, there's more room to track and click--left, right, center, and everywhere in between. Without a separate button, the trackpad gives your hands plenty of room to move on the large, silky glass surface. It also incorporates Multi-Touch gestures--including swipe, pinch, rotate, and four-finger swipe. And it also now supports inertial scrolling, an intuitive way to scroll through large photo libraries, lengthy documents and long web sites.

Affordable Laser Hair Removal (Paddington, London, by Sally Smith)

Poor telephone receptionist service and e-mail responses, some laser therapists are better than others, and can be hard to book an appointment to fit your schedule as they get booked up very quickly in advance and can be unflexible. Price can be affordable especially on special offers but normally limited to first 10 customers. Appointments don?t always run on time up to 15min late and staff just chit chat and ignore you, not very professional. Not sure about cleanliness/hygeine as i never see them wipe things/ throw used spatulas away/change paper but have been assured they do? at the end of that day its cheap here and what you get is what you pay for.

Lakers are not even fit for Kings in falling to 0-2 for first time since 2002-03 NBA season

Lakers forward Josh McRoberts, right, goes to the basket against Sacramento center DeMarcus Cousins during the first quarter of Monday's game. (AP Photo/Rich Pedroncelli)

SACRAMENTO - One game into the shortest season of many of their professional lives, and the Lakers were already hurting when they took the court Monday night at the Power Balance Pavilion to face the Sacramento Kings.

By now you probably know all about the torn ligament in Kobe Bryant's right wrist. Then came word an hour or so before the game that Pau Gasol suffered a sprained right shoulder and Josh McRoberts had a sprained left thumb.

It was double trouble since the Lakers were already without Andrew Bynum, who served the second game of his four-game suspension Monday.

It was just the sort of thing the Kings could exploit en route to a 100-91 victory, dropping the Lakers to 0-2 for the first time since the 2002-03 season.

Gasol and McRoberts were injured during the Lakers' come-from-ahead loss Sunday afternoon to the Chicago Bulls at Staples Center, the first of three games in as many days to start the lockout-shortened 2011-12 season.

The Lakers complete their only stretch of back-to-back-to- back games when they play host to the Utah Jazz tonight at Staples Center. It's only part of a grueling period in which they play six times in eight days, however.

Gasol, who shifted to center from power forward to replace Bynum, was ineffective early but found a better rhythm to start the third quarter. He wore a black neoprene sleeve to protect his shoulder.

McRoberts, who moved from a backup role to the starting

power forward job, couldn't remember how he hurt his thumb. He didn't believe it would trouble him and he contributed some energetic play from the opening tip.

The Lakers looked like a tired and injured team against the Kings, falling behind in the first half and staying behind in the second. Some inspired bench play kept them close in the first half, before Bryant and Gasol fueled a fourth-quarter comeback.

Sacramento led by as many as 15 points in the fourth, then put the game away in the closing minutes.

Bryant scored 29 points on 10-for-24 shooting, including two on a thunderous dunk off a lob pass from Devin Ebanks on a third-quarter fastbreak. Gasol scored all but two of his 15 points in the second half. He also grabbed nine rebounds.

McRoberts had two points, five rebounds and three assists.

Marcus Thornton scored 27 points for the Kings, who were playing their season opener. Rookie Jimmer Fredette had six points in his NBA debut, leaving little doubt that he can be an effective player in the pros after a stellar college career at BYU.

Meanwhile, Devin Ebanks made his second consecutive start at small forward for the Lakers, keeping veterans Matt Barnes, Luke Walton and Metta World Peace on the bench. World Peace (the former Ron Artest) will remain with the second unit.

"It's a job interview," coach Mike Brown said of starting Ebanks, a second-year player. "I have the right to terminate that interview at any time, especially when I have some pretty good veterans sitting and waiting and pushing the guys in front of them."

World Peace then went out and scored 10 points on 5-for-7 shooting in 12 minutes, 25 seconds in the first half, helping to keep the Lakers close to Sacramento before a late collapse enabled the Kings to take a 49-40 lead by halftime.

World Peace finished with 19 points on 8-for-14 shooting.

By game's end, Barnes and Walton also would play.

The Lakers went into the game with five consecutive victories over the Kings in Sacramento, including what many assumed would be their final visit to the place Phil Jackson rather famously called a cow town.

The Kings were close to swapping the state capital for the suburbs of Orange County, but a last-gasp effort by mayor Kevin Johnson and other city officials kept the team from leaving the outdated and renamed Power Balance Pavilion for Anaheim.

"You have to give credit to Kevin Johnson and the city of the Sacramento for doing what they needed to know to give this thing another go," Brown said when asked about the possibility the Lakers might have played Monday at the Honda Center.

The first and most important thing you have to look for when choosing the best iPhone games 2012 is ? fun! Any game should be made purely for entertainment and it needs to be amusing and enjoyable. That is why there exist so many different types of games. Some people like brain teasers, some people like shooter games, others like racing games etc. So, what are for you the best iPhone games in 2012, depends only on the fact how much you find them entertaining to yourself.

Games for the iPhone can be downloaded for free, but exist others as well for which you have to pay. Usually their price is not more than $10. Free games are less complex, but that doesn?t mean that they are not good or that they are not fun. They just have a simple graphic, and because of that they take less space on your iPhone, and that is a good thing. The good thing about free games is that if you don?t like them, you can simply delete them from your iPhone and look for other ones. iPhone games have a lot of features like for example menus, instructions, sound, hints etc. A good game will always respond very fast to the command you give to it. Some games can have simple graphics, and other ones can have sensational graphics. Depending on the graphics, some games will require less memory of the phone, and some will require more. A simple game usually requires around 2 MB of memory. But, from the other side, some complex games can require even over 100 MB of memory. When choosing the best iPhone games 2012, choose the ones that will be fun for you. What is fun to one person doesn?t mean that will be fun to other person as well.

However, here is a list of 10 best iPhone games 2012, based on the votes of the people ? Angry Birds, Spartacus: Blood and Sand, The Impossible Game, Cut the Rope, Slingshot Cowboy Plus Ads Free, The Carnival Game, Fruit Ninja, Tiny Wings, Words With Friends, and Pocket Frogs.

Play Poker, Give to Charity, Meet a Former Local Star Baseball Player

There are many levels of celebrity status for athletes, ranging from the 'even your mother knows who they are' names such as Barry Bonds and Derek Jeter, all the way down to those that are only considered big-time to the community they hail from.

Where Shelley Duncan falls is a matter of debate. But regardless, the former Canyon del Oro High School and University of Arizona baseball star is back in town and looking to raise money for local charities.

The avenue for this effort is through a poker tournament, the Duncan's Celebrity Poker Classic, scheduled for the evening of Jan. 7 at Casino del Sol. Cards are in the air at 7 p.m.

The buy-in is $299, of which $150 goes to the prize pool. That's a pretty huge piece taken out of the entry, but that's because $50 goes to the Tucson Youth Baseball Association and another $69 gets you a "promotional package" that includes vouchers for a room at Del Sol's new hotel ? which is pretty dang nice, just for the record ? and a trip to the casino's Festa buffet.

Another $30 goes to the house.

The tournament is open to the first 130 people, with 10 to 20 entrants getting a piece of the prize pool. Some rebuys and add-ons are available, though it's not clear if that money will go to the prize pool or not.

It is expected other local "celebrities" will participate in the tournament, but at this point Del Sol's poker management couldn't confirm anyone beyond Duncan, who has had a semi-productive pro baseball career with stints on the New York Yankees and Cleveland Indians.

Rwandan rebel freed after intn'l charges dropped (AP)

THE HAGUE, Netherlands ? The International Criminal Court says it has freed a Rwandan rebel and returned him to France after dismissing charges against him.

It is the first time that the court, based in The Hague, has released a detained suspect since it began work in 2002 as the world's first permanent war crimes tribunal.

Charges of murder, rape and torture against Callixte Mbarushimana were dropped last week for lack of evidence. The crimes were linked with actions by Rwandan rebels in neighboring Congo.

His release was delayed because he was the subject of a U.N. travel ban.

Mbarushimana had lived in Paris before his arrest in January. On Friday the court said he was "released on French territory, as he requested" through the cooperation of the Netherlands and France.

Homemade Food for Pets | Pet Health

dog holding carrotsWith the winter holidays coming up, many pet parents are looking for ways to pamper and spoil their dogs and cats. One such favorite is a giving our pets a special meal. Some people choose to do this by making a delicious homemade meal for their pets. However, people do not need to wait for the holidays to spoil their pets with a healthy and tasty meal. In fact, some pet parents prefer to make homemade meals for their pets year round. If you are considering switching from commercial pet food to homemade, be sure to consult your vet first to ensure you give your pet a balanced, nutritious meal.

Over the past decade, pet owners have been more inclined to make their pets? food themselves. Knowing where the ingredients come from is especially important to some. Others simply enjoy taking the time to prepare fresh food for their beloved dog or cat. Additionally, some people even notice improvements in their pet?s health and behavior after switching to a homemade diet.

Responsible pet parents should always be aware of what they are feeding their pets?whether the food is homemade or store bought. Commercial food is quick and easy, but some may have more filler or other questionable ingredients, while others are made with the best ingredients. So, for those who prefer the convenience of commercial pet foods, it is possible to find a high quality food that offers their pet all the necessary nutrition. They just need to be sure that they choose the right pet food for their dog or cat.

When concocting a homemade diet for your dog or cat, it is important that you provide your pet with a well-balanced meal. Generally, a dog?s diet should consist of 1/3 protein, (I.e. eggs, meat or dairy products) and 2/3 grains and vegetables. Cats on the other hand, are more carnivorous and require a diet that is higher in protein. Their diet should be at least ? protein, and ? grains and vegetables. Ultimately, those who choose to make their own pet food need to make sure it meets all their pet?s nutritional requirements. Simply put, it should include a protein source, a carbohydrate source, vitamins and minerals, and even a small amount of fat.

If you choose to use a pet food recipe, confirm that it is acceptable and indeed good for your pet. Do not use a recipe that includes foods that are dangerous or toxic to your pet such as chocolate, candy or anything that has the sweetener Xylitol in it, grapes or raisins, avocados, macadamia nuts, walnuts, mushrooms, mustard seeds, onions or onion powder, chives, garlic (including raw, cooked or powdered), or yeast dough. You should also avoid giving your pet coffee grounds, caffeine, tea, or alcohol. Lastly, you should not give your pet raw or undercooked meat, eggs or bones since these may contain the bacteria Salmonella or E. coli, which is harmful to both humans and pets.

Whether you prefer feeding your pets a commercial food diet, or making the food yourself, as long as your pet is getting proper nutrition, a balanced diet, and a healthy meal, you cannot go wrong.

World pays tribute to "great European" Havel (Reuters)

LONDON (Reuters) ? U.S. President Barack Obama and other world leaders hailed on Sunday late former Czech President Vaclav Havel as a humble hero whose resistance to Communism helped bring about a united and free Europe.

The leader of the "Velvet Revolution" that toppled Communist rule in Czechoslovakia, a former chain smoker who survived several operations for lung cancer, died at 75 in his country home north of Prague.

Political leaders praised Havel as an inspiration against tyranny worldwide while intellectuals mourned the bookish and shy former playwright who loved jazz and theatre.

"His peaceful resistance shook the foundations of an empire, exposed the emptiness of a repressive ideology, and proved that moral leadership is more powerful than any weapon," Obama said in a statement, adding that he had been inspired by Havel.

"He also embodied the aspirations of half a continent that had been cut off by the Iron Curtain, and helped unleash tides of history that led to a united and democratic Europe."

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said: "We will remember his commitment to freedom and democracy just as much as his great humanity. We Germans especially have much to thank him for."

"Together with you, we mourn the loss of a great European," she wrote to Havel's successor, Czech President Vaclav Klaus.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy said "France loses a friend, Europe loses one of its wise men." British Prime Minister David Cameron recalled the 1989 uprising in Prague that ended Soviet-backed rule: "No one of my generation will ever forget those powerful scenes from Wenceslas Square two decades ago."

LITERARY LEGACY

Anders Fogh Rasmussen, the secretary-general of NATO, which in 1999 included the former Warsaw Pact member, said Havel "will be remembered around the world as a great writer, a visionary and a leader who helped to reunite Europe after half a century of division."

Lech Walesa, the former Polish president whose Solidarity union also battled Communism in Eastern Europe, said Havel was "a great and well-deserving man."

Walesa, who won a Nobel Peace Prize for leading his country against the Soviets, said Havel, too, should have received the honor, "but in the world, not everything is just."

Havel was repeatedly edged out for a Nobel Peace Prize despite playing "a central role in that miraculous half-year" of 1989 when numerous eastern European regimes fell, Norwegian Nobel Committee executive secretary Geir Lundestad recalled.

"I will be spilling no secrets when I say that he was nominated many times," Lundestad told Norway's Aftenposten. "But there is only one prize a year."

Havel was a reluctant politician, driven to his political role by his moral resistance to Communism, said his friend Michael Zantovsky, Czech Ambassador to London.

"He was very much a politician against his own will," he told BBC television. "He was completely unlike most statesmen or politicians that you meet. He was rather diffident, shy even. He had none of the mannerisms that you usually associate with public personalities or celebrities."

Israeli President Shimon Peres told Reuters that "as a person he was a very unique man, determined but pleasant, strong in his convictions but listening to other voices. In that respect, he unified us. He unified us as a civilization."

Havel's role in Czech and European history should not completely overshadow his literary legacy, intellectuals and cultural figures said.

Havel wrote absurdist dramas in the 1960s. He returned to writing in recent years, publishing the play "Leaving" to rave reviews in 2008.

"In his political life, one forgets what a wonderful playwright he was," Sam Walters, director of the Orange Tree Theatre in west London, who knew and worked with Havel, told BBC

TV.

"He was someone who obviously fought and suffered for what he believed was right and in the end won."

Attack in Belgian city leaves 5 dead, 122 wounded (AP)

LIEGE, Belgium ? A man armed with grenades and an assault rifle attacked holiday shoppers Tuesday at a central square in the Belgian city of Liege. Five people died, including the attacker, and 122 others were wounded, officials said.

It was not immediately clear what motivated the attack in the busy Place Saint-Lambert square, the central entry point to downtown shopping streets in the city in eastern Belgium. The attack prompted hundreds of shoppers to stampede down old city streets, fleeing explosions and bullets.

Interior Ministry official Peter Mertens said the attack did not involve terrorism but did not explain why he thought that.

Belgian officials identified the attacker as Nordine Amrani, 33, a Liege resident who they said had done jail time for offenses involving guns, drugs and sexual abuse. He was among the dead, but Liege Prosecutor Danielle Reynders told reporters it was unclear if he committed suicide or died by accident. He did not die at the hands of police, she said.

The other dead were two teenage boy students aged 15 and 17 and a 75-year-old woman, while an 18-month-old toddler died Tuesday evening in the hospital, Liege police said.

Reynders said Amrani had been summoned for police questioning on Tuesday but the reason for that was not clear. He still had a number of grenades with him when he died, she said.

Officials said Amrani left his home in Liege with a backpack, armed with hand grenades, a revolve and an FAL assault rifle. He walked alone to the central square, then got onto a platform that gave him an ideal view of the square below, which was bedecked with a huge Christmas tree and crowded with shoppers.

From there, Amrani lobbed three hand grenades toward a nearby bus shelter, which serves 1,800 buses a day, then opened fire upon the crowd. The explosions sent shards of glass from the bus shelter across a wide area.

"I heard a loud boom," said witness Dimitri Degryse. "I thought it was something on my car that was broken or something. Then a few seconds after a second boom, and I saw all the glass breaking, I saw people running, screaming."

As soon as the shooting began, hundreds fled the square as well as a nearby Christmas market. Video from the scene showed people, including a large group of children, rampaging through the city center to seek cover, some still carrying shopping bags.

As police hunted for possible accomplices, residents were ordered to stay in their homes or seek shelter in shops or public buildings. As sirens howled and a police chopper roared overhead, a medical post was set up in the nearby courtyard of the Prince Bishops courthouse. Dozens of emergency vehicles took victims away for treatment.

Police closed off the area but found no accomplices and calm returned a few hours after.

The Place Saint-Lambert and the nearby Place du Marche host Liege's annual Christmas market, which consists of 200 tiny shops and attracts some 1.5 million visitors a year. By dusk, with the Christmas lights gleaming again, King Albert II and Queen Paola came to pay their respects, as did Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo.

Herman Van Rompuy, a former Belgian prime minister who is now president of the European Council, said he was badly shaken by the attack.

"There is no explanation whatsoever," Van Rompuy said. "It leaves me perplexed and shocked."

While officials excluded terrorism as a motive for Amrani's attacks, Europe has experienced several recent terror attacks.

In Italy on Tuesday, a man opened fire in an outdoor market in Florence, killing two vendors from Senegal and wounding three other immigrants before killing himself, authorities said. Investigators identified the attacker as 50-year-old Gianluca Casseri, and RAI state TV said he was known to police for having participated in racist marches by an extreme right-wing group.

In Norway last July, far-right extremist Anders Behring Breivik went on a bomb and shooting spree that killed 77 people around Oslo, apparently motivated by a hatred of Muslim immigrants and a deep grudge against the governing Labor Party. A psychiatric evaluation found him criminally insane, which if upheld by the courts means he would end up in compulsory psychiatric care instead of prison.

Belgium, also has not been immune to this sort of violence.

In the early 1980s, a group of heavily armed gunmen dubbed the "mad killers of Brabant" terrorized supermarkets and other stores in the Brabant region around Brussels. The gunmen fired apparently at random at bystanders during a series of robberies between 1982 and 1985, killing 28 people in all.

The scale of the bloodshed, the military weapons used, and the fact that the robberies often involved relatively small amounts of money sparked suspicions that right-wing terrorists may have been behind the attacks. But there were no claims of responsibility and the identity of the attackers remains unknown to this day.
