Canon Cinema EOS-1D C hits stores in Japan today, expected stateside later this week

Canon Cinema EOS1D C hits stores in Japan today, expected stateside later this week

At $11,999, this latest Canon 1D is hardly set to become a DSLR bestseller, but there are certainly a few pro shooters willing to line up for an incredibly versatile 18-megapixel 4K cam, with EOS lens compatibility and a full-frame sensor. We were expecting Canon's top-of-the-line beast to sell for just shy of $15,000, so this new sub-$12k sticker is a pleasant surprise. You'll also need to invest in a battery of high-speed (at least 100MB/s) CF cards -- the 1D C captures 4096 x 2160 video at 24 frames per second with an approximate file size of 3.76 gigs per minute of footage, according to the camera's instruction manual, which you'll find, along with a purchase link, at the source link below. The EOS-1D C is expected to hit stores in the US later this week, but a few lucky shooters have been out and about capturing demo reels for the last few weeks -- you'll find some of that footage after the break, along with a few more clips at the coverage links below.

Stock futures fall on worries over "fiscal cliff"

Though Robert Pattinson stuck by her, Ben Affleck has left Kristen Stewart?in the dust. Citing a schedule crunch, the actor has backed out of?Focus, a con-artist movie set to costar Stewart and begin filming this spring. Stewart had just said in a recent interview that she was excited to start shooting, but now who knows what will happen. "Hi Kristen. We know that you were excited about working with Ben, but he dropped out, so we got you a replacement," a producer says to her the day she arrives on set. ...

'Breakfast at Tiffany's' added to US film registry

WASHINGTON (AP) ? "Breakfast at Tiffany's," ''Dirty Harry" and "A League of Their Own" will be preserved for their enduring significance in American culture by the Library of Congress, along with "A Christmas Story" and some pioneering sports movies.

They are among 25 selections the library is inducting Wednesday into the National Film Registry. Congress created the program in 1989 to preserve films for their cultural or historical significance. The latest additions bring the registry to 600 films that include Hollywood features, documentaries, independent films and early experimental flicks.

The newest movie chosen for preservation is 1999's "The Matrix," noted for its state-of-the-art special effects and computer-generated animation with a style that drew on Hong Kong action films and Japanese anime to change science fiction filmmaking, curators noted.

The oldest film being preserved, "The Corbett-Fitzsimmons Title Fight," dates back 115 years to 1897. Film curators said the boxing movie helped establish the film industry as a successful business, drawing on the sport's popularity and controversy to generate $750,000 in income. Boxing was illegal in many states at the time but had been made legal in Nevada, which hosted the fight. The film, with a running time of about 100 minutes, became the longest movie ever produced at the time, showing the full course of the fight.

Another pioneering sports film, "They Call It Pro Football" from 1967, was chosen for how it changed the way football was portrayed on screen. Before then, football films were mostly highlight reels. National Football League commissioner Pete Rozelle decided the success of the NFL depended on its television image, to capture the struggle of football and not just the end result on the scoreboard.

The Librarian of Congress makes the selections each year after conferring with members of the National Film Preservation Board and receiving public nominations. To be considered, the films must be at least 10 years old.

"These films are not selected as the 'best' American films of all time, but rather as works of enduring importance to American culture," said Librarian of Congress James Billington in announcing the selections. "They reflect who we are as a people and as a nation."

They also include some unforgettable characters.

Audrey Hepburn landed the lead in 1961's "Breakfast at Tiffany's" even though writer Truman Capote wanted Marilyn Monroe for the part. Film critics and the audience decided Capote was wrong and hailed Hepburn's portrayal.

"A League of Their Own" from 1992 received many public nominations for the film registry over the years. With a cast that included Geena Davis, Tom Hanks, Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell, it told the story of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.

Numerous public nominations also were received for "Born Yesterday" from 1950 and "A Christmas Story" from 1983. Both were chosen this year. Other Hollywood features on the list include "Anatomy of a Murder" from 1959 and "3:10 to Yuma" from 1957.

Each title named to the registry will be preserved in the library's Packard Campus for Audio Visual Conservation, built partially in a bunker in Culpeper, Va., or through collaborations with other archives or studios.

Documentaries chosen this year include "The Times of Harvey Milk," made in 1984 about San Francisco's first openly gay elected official who was assassinated in 1978, and "Samsara: Death and Rebirth in Cambodia" from 1990 about the struggle to rebuild after Pol Pot's rule.

This year's selections include some firsts in film history. The 1914 film "Uncle Tom's Cabin," based on the anti-slavery novel by Harriet Beecher Stowe, had been adapted earlier for movies with white actors in the lead roles. But this version was the first feature-length U.S. film to star a black actor when Sam Lucas was chosen for the part.

The library will also preserve the first "Kodachrome Color Motion Picture Tests" from 1922. The two-color film features leading actresses posing and miming for the camera to demonstrate the new color film. Before then, to show film in color, black and white images either had to be hand-painted or colored with a stenciling process. Inventors, including scientists at Kodak, began experimenting with ways to create true color film.

The Kodachrome test shown at Paragon Studios in New Jersey was the first publicly demonstrated color film that would attract interest from the American film industry. Later Technicolor would become the industry standard.

"Most every major Hollywood film from 1922 through the end of the silent era would have either a Kodachrome color sequence in it or Technicolor color sequence as a way of attracting audience interest," said Pat Loughney, chief of the library's audio visual preservation campus. "It's a technical, historical achievement, but it's important to the progress of inventive work that made motion pictures successful."

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. Dec. 20, 2012 People with Type 2 diabetes have two to four times the risk of cardiovascular disease compared to people without the disease. The best way for doctors to predict which diabetes patients are at the greatest risk for heart disease is to use a coronary artery calcium (CAC) test in addition to the most commonly used assessment tool, according to researchers at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center.

Current medical guidelines recommend treating all diabetes patients as high risk, but the Wake Forest Baptist study found that CAC can identify diabetes patients who are at very high risk for developing potentially fatal cardiovascular disease, as well as those who are at low risk.

"Our observations challenge accepted medical knowledge that all people with diabetes have the same risk. CAC is key in predicting the specific risk level," said Donald Bowden, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry at Wake Forest Baptist and senior author of the study, which is published online in the December issue of the journal Diabetes Care.

"People at very high risk are 11 times more likely to die from cardiovascular diseases as compared to those at low risk. Diagnosing a more precise risk level should help doctors provide more effective treatments and hopefully improve outcomes," he said.

The community-based Diabetes Heart Study was designed to determine if CAC provided additional information about cardiovascular disease and mortality beyond the Framingham Risk Score, the most commonly used assessment tool. A total of 1,123 people with Type 2 diabetes between 34 to 86 years old were followed for an average of 7.4 years. The study participants were recruited from clinics in western North Carolina and reflect a cross section of families with diabetes-affected members in the region.

CAC uses a CT scan to detect calcium build-up in the arteries of the heart. According to Bowden, the cost of the test is relatively low and the radiation exposure is about half of what someone would get in a year "by just walking around."

"Based on our study, we think that CAC should be added to the Framingham tool as the standard of care for all people with diabetes," Bowden said.

###

The Wake Forest Baptist team hopes to conduct additional research on how adding CAC as a diagnostic tool for diabetics could affect treatment and outcomes.

Co-authors of the study are Subhashish Agarwal, M.D., of Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center; Neal Jorgensen, M.S., of the University of Washington; Amanda Cox, Ph.D., David Herrington, M.D., Jianzhao Xu, B.S., Barry Freedman, M.D., and J. Jeffrey Carr, M.D., of Wake Forest Baptist.

This study was supported in part by the General Clinical Research Center of Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center; National Institutes of Health grant R01-AR48797, and National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute grants R01-HL67348 and R01-HL092301.

NEW YORK (AP) ? President Barack Obama has been named Time magazine's "Person of the Year" for 2012.

"We are in the midst of historic cultural and demographic changes, and Obama is both the symbol and in some ways the architect of this new America," Time Editor Rick Stengel told NBC's "Today" show, where he announced the selection on Wednesday.

The short list for the honor included Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani teenager who was shot in the head for advocating for girls' education, as well as Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi, Apple CEO Tim Cook and Italian physicist Fabiola Giannati.

Obama also received the honor in 2008, when he was President-elect.

In an interview with Time, Obama said his re-election "may have been more satisfying a win than 2008."

"We've gone through a very difficult time," Obama told the magazine. "The American people have rightly been frustrated at the pace of change, and the economy is still struggling, and this president we elected is imperfect, and yet, despite all that, this is who we want to be. That's a good thing."

Last year, Time honored "The Protester," citing dissent across the Middle East that spread to Europe and the United States, saying the protesters reshaped global politics.

Time's "Person of the Year" is the person or thing that has most influenced the culture and the news during the past year for good or for ill. In 2010, Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg received the honor.

Other previous winners have included Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke, Bono and President George W. Bush.

Boehner remains hopeful on fiscal cliff compromise

WASHINGTON (AP) ? House Speaker John Boehner says he remains hopeful that a fiscal cliff compromise can be reached but says President Barack Obama has yet to offer a balanced deficit-cutting plan.

Boehner told reporters Tuesday that Obama's latest offer is for $1.3 trillion in tax increases over the next decade but just $850 billion in spending cuts. Boehner said that is not balanced enough.

As a result, Boehner says he is readying an alternative bill that would keep taxes from increasing on everyone earning $1 million or less.

Without an agreement, taxes will increase on virtually every American taxpayer on Jan. 1, and wide-ranging spending cuts will also begin.

Flood Insurance Myths - RestorationLocal.com

When it comes to flooding and how it affects your insurance, there is a lot of misinformation floating around. Homeowners often do not learn exactly what is in their homeowners insurance policies until well after a flood has occurred. At this point it is too late to make changes and they find themselves stuck with a good sized bill.

Do you have flood insurance? If not, can you get it? Are you eligible for federal assistance? Let?s examine a few of the more common myths related to flooding.

#1: I have homeowners insurance, so I do not need flood insurance. The fact is that most homeowners policies do not cover flooding. You will need to purchase additional coverage for an additional premium to guarantee the coverage you need.

#2: I don?t live in a flood plain, so I do not need insurance. The fact is that flooding occurs in every part of the country, and 25% of all flood insurance claims come from areas best described as low to moderate risk.

#3: I live by the ocean, so no one will sell me flood insurance. With very few exceptions, flood insurance is available anywhere in the US, as long as the community participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (MFIP).

#4: Flood insurance wasn?t required when I bought my home?.why do I need it now? Any area can flood if the conditions are right. You don?t have to live near a lake or stream to see flooding?.a burst pip or blocked sewer line can have the same effect.

#5: Flood insurance covers the whole house. Actually, it doesn?t cover your basement contents in the event of basement flooding. The structure is covered, as are major equipment such as appliances, but basement and crawlspace items are not.

#6: Flood insurance will strain my budget. Low risk areas will be cheaper to insure than high risk, with correspondingly lower premiums. The average flood insurance policy is less than $500 yearly.

#7: FEMA will cover flood damage. Only if your area is declared a national disaster, and this only happens about half the time. Do you really want to run those odds when it comes to your home and possessions?

#8: I live in an apartment, so I cannot buy flood insurance. You can actually buy policies to cover any home, apartment, condo, or business.

#9: I have been flooded before, so no one will cover me. If your community is a part of the NFIP, then you can still get flood insurance. It is an even better incentive to do so if you have been flooded before.

A Horse of Gold?? | They call me Betty

gold piece 3

This is the story of a horse. A very special horse..

Now if you follow my blog you know that here at Betty?s house we ride horses competitively (cutting horses, gymkhana) and for fun (trail riding, etc.). Nothing brings our family greater satisfaction than introducing a child to the joys of riding horses. The feeling of freedom so many never experience in?a lifetime that comes from loping in an arena aboard a 1500 pound animal.

But it wasn?t always that way here at our ranch.? There was a time when if I never saw another horse again it would be too soon.? Growing up on a horse ranch as a child, I had my fill of horses and the chores that went along with raising these four-legged beasts. I never understood why they came before us children? My self-centered life revolved around much more important things than feeding and watering them twice a day.? It was always an inconvenience for me and I was a sniveling pain in the ass to my parents.

Why?

Simply put, I was too young and absorbed to realize these chores equated to valuable life lessons being instilled by my parents. ?Lessons that would form who I became as life away from home molded me into the man I am today.? Animals have a way of inadvertently teaching, by forcing you to learn responsibility, punctuality, empathy, kindness, courage and patience.? I learned all these important traits from begrudgingly taking care of horses and sheep on our ranch.

So what does this have to do with a story about a horse?

When I left home, animals had left a bad taste in my mouth. I swore to the heavens above I would never, ever own a horse again.? As a young adult I worked with a few horses on a dairy and would ride them any chance I could while hanging out with friends. My skills were average but I could hold my own using lessons taught by my mother, but really was never looking to head down the old equine trail ever again.? You see all those years of watching my parents struggle to make ends meet while raising, training, showing and riding horses combined with the responsibility of feeding, watering and caring for these creatures left me feeling very strongly in regards to never owning a horse.

When I was a teenager?my parents dissolved?the horse business, selling off all their animals, taking jobs in town?and soon?purchasing and?raising ostriches for meat. No more horses! Hurray! Life seemed pretty good.

Then one day my dad purchased a horse named Gold Piece.? He was??Gold?? I know hard to believe huh? He was a Tennessee walker.

The Tennessee Walker or Tennessee Walking Horse is a breed of riding horse. Originally bred in the Southern United States to carry the owners of plantations around their lands,[1] this breed is known for their unique four-beat ?running walk.? The breed is rarely seen in any of the sport horse disciplines; however, they are popular in trail riding because of their smooth gait, stamina and easy temper. They are also seen in Western riding disciplines and in harness. ?Wikipedia?

Gold Piece was a tall horse with a?wonderful gate, he was friendly enough and my father adored him.? My parents built him a fine paddock at their home and Gold Piece quickly became my father?s four legged friend.? There doesn?t seem to be a recollection of my father ever riding Gold Piece although my mother claims she has been atop this steed.? For years Gold Piece just roamed his little 3 acre patch coming in to eat in the morning and talk with my dad (as dad puts it) repeating the same schedule of events in the ?evening.

I never understood why someone would own a horse without riding it. Horses to me at the time werent?pets, but?livestock and should have been used as such. It?s in the animals best interest to be worked and exercised everyday, used?to their?potential.? So needless to say it bothered me that this horse just walked around, eating his way through my parents finances.? (Complete self-absorption huh?)

My parents eventually sold their home and moved onto our ranch, Gold Piece in tow, allowing them to ease their financial burdens while growing older.? We made a home for the horse and before long seeing him out there ignited a passion inside our children. We acquired a few horses (against my better judgment) and all my children began to ride.? My wife took the lead as her love for all animals carried over into caring for these creatures as well.? All the while Gold Piece just stared blankly from his paddock while watching us do our thing.? I would go pet him and tell him I was sorry but he was dads and I really didn?t want to cross that line.? During the winter my wife found an affordable arena for us to board our horses so the children could ride out of the rain as our place would turn into a bit of a mud pit.? After a few weeks and some favorable remarks to my parents,?Gold Piece soon joined us at my father?s request.? It made dad feel good to know his buddy was inside out of the weather, and socializing with other horses.? My father had developed some health issues which slowed him down a bit; so he dropped by the barn everyday when he felt good, every couple of days when he didn?t, but his horse was always there, head hanging out of the stall happy to see him. In fact it used to make me chuckle, because I could never figure out how the horse knew my father had arrived on the premises.? But sure enough, trucks would come and go but when dads truck arrived Gold Pieces head would pop right out and he would start licking his lips in anticipation of the apple/oat cookies my dad always carried in his pocket.

One day while watching the kids ride, I tired of sitting on the sidelines, if my dad wasn?t going to ride this horse well gosh darn it I was! I grabbed a saddle, pulled down his bit, tacked him up and moved off into the arena.? Within fifteen minutes my head was abuzz with all the memories of riding horses at my parents as a kid, with friends while growing up, and on trail rides as a young adult. Gold Piece had reignited a passion I had suppressed for far too long.

This horse, single-handedly or Hoofed as the case may be erased my ignorance, awakened the realization my parents hadn?t been punishing me with all those chores as a kid; helped me understand what I needed to do as a father with my own children and brought back my need to ride, enjoy the thrill of riding and compete against other trained animals working as team towards a common goal.? During his tenure at the barn Gold Piece gave a?many of our young friends their first rides in the arena and he gave my oldest a reason to ride with his father.?Always willing and full of steam Gold Piece would go until the verge of collapse if you asked him too.? Pretty cool horse. ?My younger children seeing their parents ride this big Gold trotting machine wanted to ride every chance they could.? If it wasn?t for Gold Piece?my wife and I?wouldn?t have met and made friends with a wonderful group of people that we ride with to this day! He and his stubbornness also introduced me to my ?sister from another mister?. For that I am very thankful.

Gold Piece wasn?t always perfect, he challenged me every chance he had, for that I am very appreciative.? But what he lacked in patience under saddle he more than made up for in personality outside the arena.? He never kicked, bit or pushed his weight around. If you were small he side-stepped out of your way. He always let you pet him and was happy to do so.? The little ones had no problem grooming him and he eased under pressure from the brush, much like a cat would purr at a belly rub.? He was just a good old horse.

Gold Piece passed away today.? My daughter found him down in his stall this morning when she went out to feed. He was close to 30, fighting cancer and we all knew the day was coming. But it didn?t make it any easier. My father is devastated.? As I sit here writing this I believe this horse was probably my father?s last true friend; always there when he needed him, never argued or disagreed with him and listened with nothing but the best of intentions. Nothing is harder than watching your dad cry. My mother is doing her best stiff upper lip imitation as always but I know deep inside she is hurting as well, not just for herself but for my father?s loss.

A funny thing, for all he taught us he never asked for very much in return. He ate his hay, talked to my dad and went about his daily business like that of a proud Tennessee walker. Upon hearing of his passing, a friend of ours dropped us a note on Facebook that read; I think he (Gold Piece) heard there was a little girl from CT that needed him?..It may sound a little crazy but I looked it up on Yahoo news?and it?s true. Little 6-year-old?spitfire, Jessica Rekos, one of the 20 children that perished at Sandy Hook Elementary School had desperately wished for a horse and was going to get cowboy boots for Christmas.

Because I believe there is a God, because I believe that everything happens for a reason and because I know that horse would never have left my dad for anything in the world, maybe just maybe it?s possible to believe there was a higher calling and he (Gold Piece) answered that call, meeting up in heaven?with a little girl who wanted nothing more than a horse of her own.?I could think of no greater comfort for such a little soul,?and maybe, just maybe her parents can now?rest a little easier. The lord will take wonderful care of her as?she?rides the heavens above upon?her beautiful horse of gold.

Rest In Piece both of you, the fields are endless, you are both safe now, god speed?

news local: Self Improvement Times: 3 Simple Steps For Spiritual ...

Are you living in a state of debt? It's not just about the money. Even the richest people are in a state of debt. Prosperity and abundance are the new wealth. You can get out of debt, and all it takes is a shift in your thoughts. It's time to create balance, banish negative thinking, and work on your spiritual fitness. Debt is a state of mind created by erroneous thoughts about people around us, or connected to us, and situations we usually can't control.

In order for anything to change at all, you have to change your way of thinking. Norman Vincent Peale said, "Change your thoughts and you change your world." You have all the abundance you need right now. You just have to access that abundance. It is not easy, but what worth doing ever is? You have to do the work to change your mindset because this is a shift that starts internally. You can make external shifts to manage debt, but if you don't make internal, more pragmatic shifts, it is all for naught; you cannot make lasting change without a change in consciousness.

It may surprise you to learn that debt is not just about money. Debt occurs when we hold on to negative, unforgiving thoughts about people and situations, thoughts that actually block our prosperity and keep us in a state of lack. Abundance on the other hand, is a state of consciousness that acknowledges that we have many, many resources that we can use. It all starts up top… from your mind down. This article details step one in eliminating your debt mindset and creating spiritual and financial fitness, so read on, my friend.

The first step for attaining spiritual and financial fitness is TO RELEASE THE OLD--mentally, emotionally and physically-- and make space for what is for your highest good. You must get rid of clutter, which is a block for your energy, and let go of things and thought patterns you no longer need.

First things first--Do some forgiveness work. Make a list of people you need to forgive… and who you think need to forgive you, and work with that list. Do some sort of ritual or visualization to forgive or write out forgiveness statements. I know forgivness work isn't exactly the most fun activity, probably far from it in fact, but this is a necessary step to your abundant life.

The unforgiving energy you are holding against these people drains your energy. You're giving them permission to hang out in your mind; in fact, you're giving them a guest room there! You're making them comfortable, offering them a comforter, a cup of cocoa, your HARD-EARNED ENERGY that is stuck in unforgiveness. It's time to let go of that mental junk--for yourself, not them!

On a physical level, it's time for you to clear out the clutter in your living and work space. In the ancient Chinese art of Feng Shui, clutter is a block for your energy. If you have piles of stuff in your living room, hallway, and bedroom, it's hard for you to move around your house. It's blocking you and your energy from flowing well. Get rid of the stuff you don't need and the stuff you don't even like. If you don't like it, why on earth are you keeping it?

Give all that extra stuff away to someone else who will cherish it. If you look around, you will see things you've outgrown or things you didn't really need in the first place. What about that old tea set that doesn't match your decor? Or that paisley print top you bought because it was on sale? Think of someone else it would be perfect for and give it to them. They will feel abundant because you thought of them--and you will be free of extra "stuff" that is taking up room you could use for something you truly love.

Remember that there are also numerous charities you can donate to. You can even increase your prosperity by writing off these things on your taxes. You can sell items on Craig's List and donate the money to charity. You can keep the money and tithe it back to something that nourishes you… life coaching, your church, or even your fitness organization or instructor. Wouldn't your yoga instructor love that paisley-print top stuck in the back of your closet by the way?

There is something else that impedes our spiritual and financial fitness. In fact, the first thing people give up when they get too busy is their "me time." They forfeit the time they spent walking or meditating or praying in order to take stock of their dis-order. You have to take a mental break or you just might have a mental break. There's no reason you would give up the food that supports your body. Why give up the "food" that supports your soul?

Whether you are sitting still or exercising, use meditation or prayer to push away the mental clutter. No matter what, I practice the Reiki Method of Natural Stress and Pain Relief every morning. I've been practicing for twenty years now and I can't start the day without it. I'm not a morning person, so my Reiki practice helps get me out of bed and start my day off on the right foot.

So here are your action steps, friend. For the first step of releasing the old, I want you to focus on clearing the clutter, on all levels, and start in the right direction. Make your forgiveness list. Forgive the people on it. De-clutter your house. Purge your closet, your house, your garage, your car, your cubby, whatever! And remember to take care of you. After all, you must take care of yourself before you take care of everyone else. Trust me on this one; you will feel better and be better for it.

Don't forget to stay tuned for the next article in this series in which you will find out about another vital step to your spiritual and financial fitness. Let's get you trained and ready for a prosperity marathon, shall we?

Greek economy may start to grow in 2014, minister says

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece's economy, expected to slump for a sixth straight year in 2013, may begin to recover in 2014, the country's finance minister said on Saturday.

"I believe that after the second half of 2013 we will be able to see growth, with positive rates of change in GDP on a quarterly basis or month-by-month," Finance Minister Yannis Stournaras told Imerisia newspaper on Saturday.

Wage cuts and tax increases will keep the economy in a sixth consecutive year recession in 2013, with national output projected to shrink by 4.5 percent, based on official estimates.

The economy has contracted by a cumulative 24 percent since 2008, according to the country's central bank.

"Whatever positive we achieve henceforth will be like rain falling in the desert, given that the country will be waking up from a recession of unprecedented duration," Stournaras said.

In a separate speech to a medical conference, Stournaras said Greece would use 16 billion euros to recapitalize banks next week, and another 7.2 billion in the first quarter, after international lenders said they would resume aid payments on Thursday.

Euro zone partners and the International Monetary Fund agreed to unlock 49.1 billion euros in aid by the end of March. The decision to release the long-delayed installment came after Athens passed austerity measures and completed a debt buyback.

Greek banks will get the capital injection from the Hellenic Financial Stability Fund (HFSF), which has already provided 18.5 billion euros to the country's four biggest lenders.

"Banks will be able to boost their portfolios with new, strong bonds from the EFSF (European Financial Stability Facility), without accessing the (central bank's) ELA (emergency liquidity assistance) mechanism," Stournaras told the conference.

Athens is aiming at a primary budget surplus next year.

Producer prices fall sharply as energy prices tumble

LONDON, Dec 13 (Reuters) - Tour de France champion Bradley Wiggins has not ruled out an attempt at retaining the title next year. "As it stands, I'm probably going to try and win a second Tour de France, so I don't know, maybe we'll have two leaders (with Chris Froome)," the Team Sky rider, who became the first Briton to win the race, told BBC Radio 5 Live on Thursday. "We are resetting the goals, trying to win a second Tour de France, but you cannot replicate those circumstances. ...

Berkeley Lab research finds the insurance industry paying increasing attention to climate change

The insurance industry, the world's largest business with $4.6 trillion in revenues, is making larger efforts to manage climate change-related risks, according to a new study published today in the journal Science.

"Weather- and climate-related insurance losses today average $50 billion a year. These losses have more than doubled each decade since the 1980s, adjusted for inflation," says the study's author Evan Mills, a scientist in Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab)'s Environmental Energy Technologies Division. "Insurers have become quite adept at quantifying and managing the risks of climate change, and using their market presence to drive broader societal efforts at mitigation and adaptation."

Hurricane Sandy is only the most recent U.S. example of the kinds of increasing liabilities posed by severe weather events in a changing climate.

Managing a portfolio of $25 trillion in assets, similar in size to mutual funds or pensions globally, the insurance industry has become a significant voice in world policy forums addressing the issue, as well as a market force, investing at least $23 billion in emissions-reduction technologies, securities, and financing, plus $5 billion in funds with environmental screens, seeing risks to investments in polluting industries and opportunities in being part of the clean-tech revolution.

Risk and opportunity

"Where there are risks, there are opportunities," writes Mills. Responding to shareholder, regulatory, and market forces, three global initiatives [UN Environment Program Finance Initiative (1995), ClimateWise (2007), and the Kyoto Statement (2009)] have compelled 129 insurance firms from 29 countries to engage in activities including: supporting climate research; developing climate-responsive products and services; raising awareness; reducing in-house greenhouse gas emissions; quantifying and disclosing climate risks; incorporating climate change into investment decisions; and influencing public policy. The ultimate goal of these industry activities is reducing climate-related losses among their customers as well as reducing their own exposure to risk, which is rising in step with the magnitude and frequency of extreme weather-related events.

These insurers, together with reinsurance companies (the insurers of insurance companies), industry associations, brokers, catastrophe-loss modelers, and partners in the research community, have been using sophisticated analytical tools to quantify and diversify their exposure to climate change risk, more accurately price and communicate risk, and get adaptation and loss-prevention efforts up and running.

"Insurers from North America, Asia, and Europe worked with scientists through the three latest Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessments dating back to the mid 1990s to better understand their exposure to climate change risk," says Mills. "They expanded these collaborations into such projects as harmonizing economics-based insurer catastrophe models with climate models."

New insurance products and services

According to the study, 1,148 climate change adaptation and mitigation activities have emerged from 378 entities in 51 countries, representing $2 trillion (44 percent) of industry revenue. For example, insurers have brought at least 130 products and services to market encouraging the spread of more energy-efficient homes and commercial buildings by paying claims that encourage rebuilding to a higher level of energy efficiency after a loss. At least 65 other insurance industry products address the risks and opportunities of the renewable energy industry.

Pay-as-you-drive insurance policies, now numbering nearly 3 million, offer auto insurance based on number of miles driven rather than a fixed premium. GPS technologies verify driving distances, and policyholders benefit from a more accurate insurance premium. The price signal of lower premiums for miles actually driven could reduce U.S. driving by 8 percent, and oil use by 4 percent, reducing the cost of driving by $50 to $60 billion per year because of a lower chance of accidents and reduced traffic congestion.

Another innovative class of insurance products insures financial shortfalls if projects underperform at delivering energy savings or low-emissions power generation. Some insurance products manage the risks of carbon-trading transactions, such as wildfires releasing carbon sequestered in forests. By assuming these risks and engineering the insured programs to minimize their losses, insurance companies pursue a broader policy objective of verifiable, bankable, persistent emissions reductionsall of which reduce the overall risks associated with climate change.

Leading by example is another type of climate change risk mitigation strategy being seen increasingly in the insurance industry. Many insurers have programs to reduce their own greenhouse gas emissions and purchase offsets, and 26 claim they have reached carbon-neutrality. A creative example is the mangrove restoration by Tokio Marine and Nichido Insurance Co. taking place in India and southeast Asian countries. Begun in 1999, this project is close to reaching its goal of restoring 8,200 hectares (more than 20,000 acres) of mangrove forests in coastal areas of seven countries. Mangrove reforestation reduces exposure of coasts to storm damage, and helps sequester carbon.

Developing world activities

"In the developing world, poor populations have little access to insurance," says Mills. Decades ago, government and non-profit entities began issuing microinsurance policies that offer modest coverage in health, property, and life insurance for small premiums. Commercial insurers have followed suit, making tens of millions of these policies possible by integrating actuarial and environmental sciences into insurance models. Some of these products incorporate remote sensing and climate-sensitive methods to analyze the risks to crops and livestock.

There remain numerous opportunities to expand the innovation in the insurance industry, Mills believes. Some assert that the industry hasn't done enough. The federal government is the insurer of last resort for floods and crops in the U.S., but these climate risk techniques have not been applied to federal insurance programs. There's also not much research in the field of loss modeling under future climates, or comparative risk assessments of climate change response options, which could help guide policymakers about how to adapt to changing climate.

Mills' study nonetheless demonstrates that market mechanisms are playing a large and growing role in the insurance industry's efforts to address the consequences of a changing climate.

Airstrikes in Yemen kill 6 al-Qaida suspects

SANAA, Yemen (AP) ? Yemeni security officials say six al-Qaida suspects have been killed and 12 others wounded in army attacks on militant positions around the country.

The officials say two militants were killed Friday in airstrikes in southern Abyan province. The attacks came days after militants overran a military post in the area.

The officials also say four militants died when the military shelled their positions in Marib province, to the east of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorized to talk to the media.

Washington considers Yemen's al-Qaida offshoot to be the world's most dangerous branch of the terror network. The U.S. is helping the Yemeni government battle the militants.

Al-Qaida has retaliated by carrying out assassinations of several senior Yemeni military officials.
