5 Talented Filmmakers | Dirty Clean

I?m honored to share the amazing work of these five filmmakers. ?The efforts of these individuals has affected me in very positive and insightful ways and has helped shape the way I view and work with moving images.? I?ve noticed something great in each one of their videos and feel like they should be recognized for their outstanding commitment to the art and craft of filmmaking. ?What?s interesting about these guys is that they all shoot and edit their own work too. ?Each one of the five filmmakers specializes in certain aspects of video art that help define their own signature style. ?Without further adieu, let me introduce the stunning works of George Salisbury, Danny Perez, Rob Chiu, Trevor Fife and Vincent Moon. ?Get lost in their amazing films and pass them on to anyone who loves outstanding filmmaking.

1. ?George Salisbury

George is the visual generalist ?for the Flaming Lips. ?Whether its album covers, ?music videos, or super tripped out visuals at their live shows, we can thank him for the stunning Lips visuals. ?The music videos he?s done are spot on. ?He seems to excel with coming up with simple ideas that create a rewarding emotional effect. ?His choppy editing is filled with zooms, colorful transitions and shaky camera effects. ?All of which can be overwhelming but if done right, help create fluidity between the picture and the music, thus maximizing the effect from simply shot footage. ?He recently started Delo Creative a couple years back with some other talented people in Oklahoma City and they?re been cranking out some fun music videos for local punk bands, as well as indie bands like Dr. Dog. ?His work has inspired me to have fun making videos with the resources I have right in front of me. ?I?ll never forget when I first saw his work at a Flaming Lips concert in Las Vegas, NV. ?If you?ve seen them live then you know what I?m talking about. ?Cut to close up of Wayne?s mouth, then flash in a animal head, cut to man brushing his teeth, then cut to guy running with wires attached to his body. ?Fun images with positive music has a profound impact on people. ?Thanks George.

2. ?Danny Perez

Super strange sets and costumes is what Danny is all about. ?His editing is especially incredible and worth mentioning. ?He directed, shot and edited ODDSAC, a feature length?psychedelic?visual album with Animal Collective all on his home computer using Final Cut Pro and After Effects. ?Sure, it took them a couple years to pull off their complete vision but in the end stands out as a masterpiece of music and film collaboration. ?His weirder and darker style fits the music of Animal Collective and Black Dice really well and makes sense why they would work together and be friends. ?His live visual work is unlike anything I?ve ever seen. ?He?s got a special technique where he?ll layer multiple clips on top of each other and add effects to blend everything together. ?I?ve messed around with this technique before and it?s an easy thing to go overboard with and turn out looking super cheesy and amateur. ?From the well designed compositions he storyboards out before each shoot, I can tell he?s got a clear idea of how to get his vision across and its refreshing to see the beautiful chaotic images he creates. ?Visit Danny?s site to see some of his incredible video art.

3. ?Rob Chiu

I first head about Chiu when I saw the main titles he did with Christoper Hewitt for OFFF New York 2010. ?I?ve always been impressed with his cutting edge shots and edits. ?He squeezes in a bunch of mila second frames of different clips to create his transitions and it helps add movement that?s very action packed. He often works with master sound composer Ben Lukas Boysen?to add the driving sound element behind his work. ?His films deal a lot with human connection and adds narrative elements in the form of poetic voice overs and wide cinematic landscape shots. ?He?s often invited ?to speak and show work in creative festivals held around the world and is represented by London?s Stink?. ?He hasn?t posted anything new to his site in awhile but check out some of his great pieces at The Ronin?and a short film titled The Division of Gravity he released 8 months ago on his vimeo.

4. ?Trevor Fife

Trevor lives right here in Portland and works with local Stumptown Coffee Roasters to make all their video content. ?He also creates well crafted pieces for notable clients like BMW, New Balance, and the Air Force. ?You?ve probably seen his work if you saw the opening title sequence for True Blood. ?His cinematography is elegant, vintage and fits the mood extremely well. ?He uses a lot of shallow depth of field and sun light bursts to fill in his frames. ?His editing is also very very good. ?He?s a master of proper pacing and colors his work beautifully. ?What I enjoy most about his videos is the way that all decision making happens for the upmost concern of the main character. ?It?s how we relate to the content that makes it enjoyable and memorable and this is what ?makes him a great storyteller. ? I?m pretty sure he?s still being represented by Digital Kitchen. ?Which is a superb digital agency and production company. ?Enjoy some of Trevor?s work here.

5. ?Vincent Moon

Vincent Moon is the eccentric French filmmaker responsible for the popular Take Away Shows on La Blogotheque. ?When it comes to shooting live band performances, he?s the best there is. ?You can tell that his ear is just as responsible as his eye for creating jaw dropping videos. He?s able to?predicate?what?s going to happen next musically and prepares his camera moves to fit precisely with the hits of the music he is filming. ?Patiently executed. ?This masterful skill he has accomplished is how each video is able to take advantage of long one take performances that make you feel like its being filmed from your perspective. ?If they?re a somewhat popular indie band then they?ve probably filmed an acoustic performance with Vincent Moon. ?He?s that guy and he?s damn good at it. ?Make sure you have enough time before watching some Take Away Shows he?s created. ?You?ll want to look up all your favorite bands and spend most of the day watching great videos. ?His website is filled with tons of visual goodies. ?Also his Vimeo is updated?regularly.
