Stephen Colbert's "The Colbert Report" has been shut down this week, and according to The New York Post (which quotes "sources close to the show") the reason is his "ailing 91-year-old mother."

Yesterday, the Comedy Central show suspended production due to "unforeseen circumstances." The network began airing repeat episodes to round out the week.

The show's warm-up comedian, Pete Dominick, Tweeted about the incident -- mainly to say he didn't have any new information: "Yes I work at the Colbert Report and No I dont know why the show is off for 2 nights," @PeteDominick said.

The New York Daily News initially reported the hiatus was due to a family emergency.

"They are a very private family," a source told the Post. "It's not surprising that he did not want anyone to know what was going on."

Exactly what Lorna Colbert's ailment may be is unknown. The family is said to be particularly close: Colbert is the youngest of 11 children, and the family became very close when his father and two older brothers were killed in a plane crash in 1974. Colbert was just 10 at the time.

The Post's source says the show is expected to return "soon" -- possibly as early as next week.
